Robots

Since the fool already blogged about the movie Terminator. Let me just blog about the latest movie I watched; the title of the movie is Robots. I like very much movies that talk about how a seemingly helpless individual who is gifted with a special mission can end up creating a change in his society. Examples of such movies are The Lord of the Rings, Happy Feet, and of course Robots. Just to give a simple plot; Robots is a story of a poor young robot named Rodney Copperbottom, who dreamed of becoming an inventor someday. For his dream to be a reality, Rodney left his family and traveled to a far away city in search for opportunities. However, he found out that the only company, which is Bigweld industry, that can help him is already controlled by an evil psychotic robot named Ratchet who dreams of eradicating poverty by suppressing the production of spare robot parts (like a normal automobile, robots also needs to be repaired in order to survive), he will only sell upgrades which is way too expensive for a middle classed robot to afford. The company was formerly owned by Bigweld, a big round robot who loves the common robots so much that he took it upon himself to create spare parts and upgrades affordable to them. He lives by the motto “You can shine no matter what your are made of”. Rodney searched for Bigweld in hopes that he can regain control of Bigweld industry and set things right again. But the search took sometime and already millions of robots needs repair. Being an inventor himself, he opened up a robot hospital where he fixed the damaged robots. Eventually he found out where Bigweld has been hiding. He rushed towards the place with the hopes that he can convince Bigweld to get back to his company. But to his disappointment, he found out that Bigweld was no longer the optimistic and happy robot he once was, he turned into a hopeless and selfish robot whose only advice to him was  “Give it up”. Rodney was so depressed because ever since Rodney was a kid, he wanted to grow up like BigWeld. Disappointed he called home and talked to his father about giving up, all his father could say is that “I know its not easy Rodney, but a dream that you don’t fight for, will hunt you for the rest of your life. It’s up to you son”. He soon found out that Ratchet’s original plan is clean the city of the middle and lower class robots by melting every robot who cannot afford the upgrades Bigweld industry sells. Rodney felt that if he will not find a way, no one else would. So his quest began, however like Frodo and the fellowship of the rings, he had some Robots who believed in him and are willing to journey with him to save the common robot. Among the members of his fellowship was Bigweld, who suddenly had a change of heart after realizing how important Rodney’s mission was. Rodney together with his fellowship was able to over throw Ratchet and regain control of Bigweld Industry.

The idea of having a purely silicon based world is really creative. Its amazing how even the insects, the animals and the people are all robotic. But aside from the out of this world idea of a robotic world, the real treasure of the movie is in its message. The message I think is the motto of Bigweld industry which is “You can shine no matter what you are made of”. A single individual regardless of race, class, or body structure can shine to be a significant individual to his society. One example of which is no other than our national hero “Jose Rizal”, who despite the being young, small, and poor traveled to the other side of the world in hopes of finding a solution to unbound his motherland. Education was his means of achieving this solution, so He became a very hard working and responsible student. His grades were so high that his professors in Madrid would regard the Filipinos as the glory of the university. He ended up being an excellent linguist speaking 22 different languages, a master swordsman, a world renowned doctor, and an influential teacher. Dr. Rizal created a legacy that even to this day continue to inspire people.
